Our Specific Curriculum Intention for Science
In Science, we hope that our children leave St Winifred’s with a love of, and a strong understanding of, the world around them and equipped with the skills and knowledge to help them think scientifically by asking and answering their own questions through a range of different types of enquiry types. At St Winifred’s, we recognise the importance of adopting stewardship of our planet and God’s creation; how we can use resources sustainably to improve life now and in the future for every living organism on the planet, especially the poor and vulnerable.
We build upon children’s natural curiosity and awe about our universe, whilst ensuring children gain an understanding of scientific knowledge, skills, concepts and processes. Children leave St Winifred’s with skills in observation over time, identifying and classifying, pattern seeking, research, and comparative and fair testing. Children will be scientifically literate and have a strong understanding of scientific vocabulary across the curriculum. From Reception to Year 6 our pupils will build up a knowledge, through revisiting key areas and building upon previous learning in all three branches of Science.
We also strive to ensure children are equipped with an understanding of the use and implications of Science in our ever-changing world. As well as recognising that Science exists in a variety of jobs, they will also learn about, research and hopefully be inspired by a number of scientists during their time at St Winifred’s and the impact of their work, recognising that Science is accessible to all.
Science in EYFS
Science is taught within the Understanding the World area of learning. Our carefully sequenced curriculum enables children to make sense of the world around them. Our setting encourages exploration and investigation both inside and out. Children observe the important processes and changes in the natural world. They make predictions and share ideas. Books and stories help to widen the children’s vocabulary and to develop their understanding of our ecologically diverse world.
