Religion

Our Specific Curriculum Intention for RE

In Religion, we hope that our children leave St Winifred’s after receiving a comprehensive education in the Catholic Faith.  That they are able to effectively recognise, express and articulate their religious knowledge and theological understanding of Jesus Christ, using the words and actions they have acquired.  Religious education is taught implicitly using resources from a range of sources such as Come and See, The Way, The Truth and The Life and Caritas in Action, however the core principals of the Catholic Faith underpin all that we do, and all that we are – it is the Golden Thread that binds our school together.  This will present an authentic vision of the Church’s moral and social teaching so that pupils develop an understanding of the underlying trends in contemporary culture and society.

Children are taught how to put their knowledge and understanding into action, and to act as Jesus did throughout their lives.  Children are able to use taught vocabulary to enter conversations regarding religion with dignity, respect and empathy, we hope that they are able to express their views and be able to ask insightful questions, understanding that not all questions can be answered, whilst remaining curious and eager to keep searching the Truth.  We also endeavour to raise pupils’ awareness of the faith and traditions of other religious communities in order to respect and understand them.  We show children how to be kind, care, how to tell the truth and to treat others fairly, in light of the Gospel Values and these are explored through the lives of the saints.

We hope that our children leave St Winifred’s ready to take on the next phase of their faith development with confidence, recognising the love they receive from Jesus Christ.

RE in EYFS

RE is taught explicitly using the Come and See scheme of work and within the Understanding the World area of learning.  In Reception, children will learn about the similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities and relate this to their own faith. They will be encouraged to talk about their own experiences, including celebrations. Books and stories will help them to widen their understanding of our culturally diverse world
