Our Specific Curriculum Intention for PSHE
Our intention is that when children leave St Winifred’s they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an age-appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being.
Our PSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life.
We aim for our children to leave us with a ‘resilience toolbox’ full of strategies they need to succeed; such as a growth mindset, people they can turn to, the knowledge of how to break down their barriers and goals, celebrating and understanding their mistakes and the ability to resolve conflict and restore relationships.
RSE at St Winifred’s ensures that, our children are equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to cope with the many pressures and challenges of modern society and to have safe, fulfilling relationships. Learning about friendships and family in RSE helps children to understand themselves and others and to have a positive view of human sexuality and dignity of the human person, in order to make practical judgements about the right thing to do in particular circumstances. All of this is done within the doctrine of the Catholic church, faithful to the Church’s vision of human wholeness whilst recognising the contemporary context in which we live today.
PSHE in EYFS
Children thrive when they feel confident and valued in their learning environment. Through adult modelling and guidance children will develop confidence, persistence and resilience. Our carefully structured Personal,Social and Emotional Development curriculum encourages children to develop self-regulation skills and to build positive relationships with adults and peers. Our setting enables children to be self-reflective and to become independent learners.
