Geography

Our Specific Curriculum Intention for Geography

In Geography, we hope that our children leave St Winifred’s with a curiosity about the world, an appreciation of God’s creation and respect for the natural and cultural diversity locally and globally.

Through the Geography curriculum they will develop concepts of space and scale and will learn to interpret a range of sources of geographical information. The children will learn locational and place knowledge incrementally by starting to explore the immediate area of their classroom, of the school grounds, then of the local area. This progresses onto knowledge of the UK, Europe then North, South and Central America. They will understand geographical similarities and differences through studying the human and physical features of these locations and how these have changed and developed over time. The children will learn skills to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of physical and human processes in environments. The children will recognise how features, places, events and people are interconnected and will demonstrate active consideration, responsibility and concern towards other people, environmental impact and sustainability both where they live and in the wider world.

Geography in EYFS

Geography is taught within the Understanding the World area of learning. We encourage the children to have a sense of wonder about the world we live in. Through observation, discussion, stories, non-fiction texts, maps and fieldwork, the children will develop a firm understanding of their environment. They will increase their geographical skills and will be able to share their understanding of some of the similarities and differences between places in their local area and in the wider world.
