Our Specific Curriculum Intention for Design & Technology
In Design and Technology, we hope that our children will leave St Winifred’s having experienced Design and Technology as an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject.
Design and Technology at St. Winifred’s Primary school encourages the children to learn, to think and intervene creatively to solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others need, wants and values.
The children, by the end of Key Stage 2, will have acquired a broad range of subject knowledge and will be able to draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.
The children are encouraged in Design Technology to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products within a variety of contexts, for a real-life purpose. The children are inspired by engineers, designers and architects enabling them to develop their skills throughout the school to create a range of structures, mechanisms, electrical systems, textiles and food products.
The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers and overall become resourceful, innovative and enterprising individuals.
Design & Technology in EYFS
Design and Technology is taught within the Expressive Arts and Design specific area of learning of the EYFS. Children are given opportunities to use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques. Children experiment with colour, design and texture. They are encouraged to share their designs and products and to articulate their thought processes and ideas. Their design skills are developed through explicit teaching of techniques and also through independent experimentation.
